Can an Alkaline Diet Reduce Back Pain?

It was once hypothesized that a latent chronic acidosis might contribute to the symptoms of lower back pain. Now, thanks to research compiled over the past 23 years, there’s scientific evidence that supplementation of alkaline minerals can reduce low back pain. (1)

THE RESEARCH

One study included 82 participants with chronic low back pain. They were all given a daily dose of an alkaline multimineral supplement over a period of 4 weeks. This was in addition to any usual medication.

Before and after the 4 week study, pain symptoms were quantified with something called the “Arhus low back pain rating scale” (ARS). The results at the end of the study revealed that the mean ARS dropped 49%. This is considered a highly significant reduction in pain.

In fact, 76 out of 82 patients experienced a reduction in their ARS back pain rating!

“The results show that a disturbed acid-base balance
may contribute to the symptoms of low back pain.
The simple and safe addition of an alkaline multimineral
supplement was able to reduce the pain symptoms
in these patients with chronic low back pain.” (1)


But how did this happen? Was the reduction in pain caused by the reduction of inflammation, the improved sleep, or the increased energy and vitality so commonly reported by those who follow an alkaline diet?

These benefits may certainly play a role, but the research shows that the pain reduction happened in a different way.

SOURCE OF PAIN REDUCTION

With supplementation of alkaline minerals, there’s a slight but scientifically significant increase in blood pH. There is also an increase in intracellular magnesium. When our bodies have adequate intracellular magnesium, this allows for the proper function of enzyme systems which also allow the activation of vitamin D. (2) It’s the activation of vitamin D that appears to make the biggest difference.

The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine reported that “Chronic low back pain and failed back surgery may improve with repletion of vitamin D from a state of deficiency/insufficiency to sufficiency. Vitamin D insufficiency is common; repletion of vitamin D to normal levels in patients who have chronic low back pain or have had failed back surgery may improve quality of life or, in some cases, result in complete resolution of symptoms.” (3)
